"Stone Town" Nature Reserve - Ciezkowice near Tarnow - Poland

South from town Ciezkowice there is a group of sandstone rock forms in shape of towers, pulpits, perches and mushrooms and there are many legends about them. These forms originated in thick-bedded sandstones and conglomerates with thin layers of shales. These rocks date from Lower Eocene (about 55.8-40.4 millions years ago). Although you can find this rock formation in many spots in the Polish Outher Carpathians, they were described from this location for the first time in 1920s, hence their name - the Ciezkowice Sandstones. At this location also the fossilized marine landslides were described for the first time in the Carpathians.
